Today, Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich offered to send the National Guard into Chicago to help stop violent crime. (Link to story.) I don't doubt the need. But I wonder what has happened to civil society? Is America destined to turn into an armed compound? Is violence that far out of control in our cities?
