Return of the Evil Empire?

In 1983, Ronald Reagan declared the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics an Evil Empire.

In 1991, that empire dissolved.

Today, Russia - the dominant force in the old U.S.S.R. - launched an invasion of South Ossetia, a disputed region in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Is the old Evil Empire making a comeback?

If you read into the history of this region, today's reports are extremely missleading.

South Ossetia, a province of Georgia, has been trying to gain their independance from Georgia for years. They have been running their own affairs since 1992, but have not been able to gain international recognition as a seperate country.

A 1992 cease-fire agreement between Georgia and South Ossetia has been enforced by Russian "peace keepers" since that time.

Georgian troops launched a military offensive to regain control of the province and now Russia is responding to protect South Ossetia and their peace keeping force.

This is what I have read on the subject today. There may be other underlying details, but we have a province of a country who wants independance and a government trying to quash that.

It doesn't sound to me like The Bear is the problem.

But the situation is certainly worth watching. Hopefully you're right and the Russians are just protecting the independence of South Ossetia. But I wouldn't count on that.

Okay, Russia has crossed the linenow, if not before.

I won't say "I told you so."
